Dungeons & Dragons is the OG. It is the game from which all other TTRPGs both descend and compete, so it seems like it would be the logical choice for a project like Applied Game Mastery. But that also creates a series of expectations and preconceptions. We seek the tools, tips, and techniques applicable across games, so we’re starting fresh; taking a “clean room” approach by starting with a flexible, genre-neutral game system, focusing on the general. As the show moves forward, we will explore more specific game mastery skills in relationship to games whose rules are “tuned” to a type of play or experience.
